Rick 330, 6th string popping out at nut: time for a new nut?

I switched from 11's to 12's about a month ago, and this week during a
particularly nasty open-string hit on the low E, the string popped out
at the nut. I attributed it to the 12's not quite fitting in the nut,
guitar being set up for 11's, and I filed at the nut a bit to try and
get the 6th string to sit a bit lower. Didn't work, so I switched back
to 11's. Sad news is, I'm having the same problem now with 11's.

Anything to try before taking the guitar in for a new nut? Thanks.

Update: I brought it in for a new nut. Hadn't had a setup in over a
year anyhow. Will be replacing the plastic nut with bone unless
somebody really quickly tells me that's a bad idea. Thanks.

Its a great idea but if you file the slot the correct width and depth
for the 12's then it has to fit and work correctly. Theres no way
around it not working.
