4001 quiet pickups

Hi,

I'm wondering if there are replacement pickups for a 4001 that will
eliminate the noise and hum susceptibility but keep the sound very
close to what it is now.
(As when I replaced the original pickups in my Telecaster with Joe
Bardens.)

Noise and hum, under what conditions. I have a 4001 which I don't find
particularly noisy but maybe you have a toaster version (mine isn't and if
you do I wouldn't change it.). Are you sure itŽs not something else like a
bad or missing connection in the grounding.
I don't think that there are many pickup alternatives if you want the same
sound because IŽm pretty sure that most 4001 users buy the bass for that
exact sound and therefore wouldn't really consider changing the pickups and
that's not much of a basis for an alternative product.

I'm mostly talking about the bass picking up hum from the CRT. I assume
switching to an LCD moinitor would get rid of this. If so, that's
probably a better solution. I have to sit facing 180º away from the
screen and then it almost completely goes away.

My 4001 is a '77 and so has high gain pickups, right?

My understanding is that the bridge and neck pickups are wound the same way.
I had my luthier reverse wind one of the pickups (I forget which one). Now
the bass is much quieter.

David,

Can't you change the phase by swapping the pickup wires around? Why did
you have the pickup rewound?

Yes it should be hi gains. Switching to a LCD monitor will almost certainly
solve the problem. I used to have (well so did everybody) a CRT and since I
switched my strat, tele, ric etc has become quiet without having to find
that certain spot where the hum wasn't significant. Still some electical
installations can also cause interference but you can just turn it off while
recording.
Of course you can change the phase of one of the pickups as well but it will
change the sound a bit too so if you want to keep the sound that's not
really an option.
If the studio is where the 4001 is mainly going to be used then I would go
for a new monitor. If live gigs is also a factor there are some tricks than
can be done to improve the isolation from outside sources but you may have
to contact a guy with some experience here. I recently had it done to my
Gibson SG and it helped quite a lot.
