1. Does someone can tell what are the main differences between
Rickenbacker bass 4003 and 4001?

2. I'm gonna be in L.A. and San Francisco on the next month. Where can
I find a variety of basses from that kind (even used...)?

Thanks in advance

Different truss rod systems.
Get a 4001

No the truss rod is less strong, and you're right the 4001 is way older.
From the mid 60s and discontinued in the early 80s. The 4003 is still very
much being produced and here in Denmark we have to wait 12 months or more to
get one because of the demand.
I think that Scott McDaniel replied "get a 4001" because they are the real
deal if you're looking for the classic Ric bass sound and he's not wrong.
The 4003 is a great bass but way more contemporary/all round sounding so if
you're after the look but quite like Fenders get a 4003, if you're after the
retro sound from the 60s and 70s get a 4001.
This is very general speaking, the 4003 is by no means a Fender and the 4001
does not neccesarily sound like McCartney, Squire or Entwhistle, it's just
to give you the general idea but they are quite different in spite of their
obvious similarities.

Thanks for the great answer !

Do you think that the 4001 is more expensive than the 4003? How much
they cost usually?

Can you (or someone else here...) recommend for a good shop in L.A. or
San Francisco? It's Okay even if they sell used basses...

Thanks in advance

You can usually get a 4001 for around $800.
Check Ebay. I'm sorry I don't know of any shops in LA or SF. But you might
want to try Mike Parks at:

He has great deals and impeccable service.
