I've been wondering about Rickenbacker pickups and the secrets behind the
sound.

Am I correct in thinking that most of the Rickenbacker models use surface-
mounted pickups?

Can that be a major contributing factor to the sound? What would happen if
you took the same pickups and sunk them into the face of the guitar a bit?

anything cold happen. but keep us informed, thanks. and see to where
you sink them. rickenbacker likes to put them in or near knots, if that
is only on open tunings.
good luck

I think they sound pretty much the same no matter how they're mounted.
